Why Memorize God’s Words?

Scripture Focus: Psalm 118:11-17

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds. . . . Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road” (Deuteronomy 11:18-19).

God wanted His people to fix His words in their hearts and minds. Today we would say He wants us to memorize His words and reflect seriously on what they mean to us, keeping them ever in our consciousness.

The psalmist wrote, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). If we memorize this verse and make it a part of our daily thinking, it will be right there when we are faced with an attractive offer involving something we know is wrong.

Not only are we to memorize God’s Word, but we are to talk about it at five specific times: when we are at home with our families, when we travel or go through all our daily activities, before we fall asleep, and after we get up. That must mean we are to refer to God’s Word in our daily conversations. As we do this, we will be keeping the Lord in our consciousness in all our waking hours. The words on our lips will reflect our constant relationship with the Lord.

Insight: Why memorize God’s words? Because it pleases Him and He uses it to help us deal with common, everyday events, problems, and temptations.
